Day 5

Subject: [firstname]: What type of content should you create?

Hey [firstname]!

There's a bunch of different types of content that you can create as part of your content marketing tactics, and I want to talk about them in today's e-mail.

First of all there's written content. This is the most common (and most important) type of content. After all, search engines “read” your written content and use it to determine what your site is all about. Written content can mean blog posts, articles, e-books, whitepapers and more.

Not everybody likes to spend time reading, so infographics are another type of content you should consider creating. As the name implies, an infographic is information presented in graphic form.

Then there are videos. Oftentimes people prefer to watch videos than read – especially if they're accessing your content on their smartphones.

Podcasts and another type of content – basically longer versions of videos but without the pictures.

There are other types of content, too, but that's enough to get you started.

Just in case you're thinking: How the heck am I going to find the time to create all this stuff? Let me reassure you that you can easily repurpose content. For example you can combine several blog posts and articles into a report. You can merge two or three reports into an e-book. Record yourself reading the e-book out loud (or hire someone to do it for you) and you've got a podcast. Cut the podcast down and edit in pictures and graphics and you've got a video.

See what I mean?

The key thing with any type of content (and the secret to successful content marketing) is you want to make it “shareable”. In other words, you want people to tell other people about your content – either by passing your e-books or reports on, or by linking to your website etc. They won't do this if your content is a blatant sales pitch. So be subtle. Establish yourself as an expert, and let people come to you.
